The Home Builders Federation has called upon local authorities to take responsibility for tackling the housing crisis as it launches its local election manifesto today (April 27).

HBF’s manifesto emphasises the economic benefits of increasing local housebuilding. The Federation said that increasing housebuilding across England could generate 200,000 jobs and £1.2 billion of central government investment through the New Homes Bonus.

As part of a list of measures within its manifesto, HBF has asked councillors to promise to immediately devise local development plans and to work with housebuilders to cut through the cost and uncertainty of burdensome regulation.

"The coalition government is giving local authorities the powers and responsibility to house the nation," commented HBF’s executive chairman Stewart Baseley. "We are asking local authorities to take this responsibility seriously. In return they will reap the benefits through local economic growth, new jobs created and investment from central government."
