BRITAIN remains in the grip of a housing crisis despite a rise in builders wanting to start work.

The number of plots registered by would-be developers rose 7% to 28,910 in the past three months, according to warranty body NHBC, to end the year 30% up.

But that was against a weak 2009 when 120,000 homes were built, the lowest total since 1923.

It is claimed Britain has a shortage of one million homes.

Mortgage lending grew at its slowest rate for a decade last month.

The British Bankers Association said its members handed out £1.46billion in home loans, half the level of November last year
